ISA World Masters Surfing Championship 2011
Well it will soon be time for the 2011 ISA’s (International Surfing Association) World Masters Surfing Championship. Just a few months stand in our way! 16th to 23rd October 2011 will have Punto Roca, in El Salvadore’s town of La Libertad, playing host to ISA’s World Masters Surfing Championship 2011 and we can’t wait!
So who are the ISA? The International Surfing Association (ISA) is recognised by the International Olympic Committee as the World Governing Authority for Surfing. It was originally founded as the International Surfing Federation in 1964 and has been running Open Division World Championships since 1964, Junior World Championships since 1980, and Masters World Championships since 2007. The ISA will hold the first Stand Up Paddle (SUP) World Championship in 2011.
ISA membership includes the surfing National Governing Bodies of 64 countries on six continents. Its headquarters are located in San Diego, California. It is presided over by Fernando Aguerre (Argentina), first elected President in 1994 in Rio de Janeiro and re-elected seven times since. The ISA’s three Vice Presidents are Alan Atkins (Australia), Mike Gerard (USA) and Karín Sierralta (Peru).
Pro surfers from all over the world will gather to tear pipes for their chance to win the gold medal for their country. There will, of course, be individual gold, silver and bronze awards that are categorised into the different age groups.
El Salvadore is said to have consistantly good surf all year round; boasting over 300 miles of coastline.
This is also quite a milestone, as this is the first time in history that El Salvadore has actually hosted a World Championship surfing event!
Surfing legends
Who are some of the greatest surfing legends’ sponsors? Corporations such as Maui, Quiksilver, Volcom, ONeil, Sex Wax, Sticky Feet Wax, Ripcurl, Roxy, Rusty, Hurly, Bodyglove, Xcel, Oakley, Dakine, Vans, Billabong, Oxo, Nixon, Burton, DC, RonJon (Ron Jon), Animal, ASP (Obviously!), Surfline and the ISA (Again… Obviously).
Claire Bevilacqua pro surfer
Claire Bevilacqua, who’s nickname due to having such a difficult surname to pronounce, is “Bevo” (Though she still likes to be called Claire), was born in Perth, Austrailia. Bevilacqua is, quite frankly, stunning!… Hot! …Stunningly hot!! (Leaving not just other surfer dudes picking their jaws up off the floor)
Born on 29th January 1983, Bevilacqua was just 20 years old when she was crowned Austrailian Junior Women’s Champion. Following this, in 2005 she joined ASP’s World Championship Tour; finishing in 10th place. And she didn’t stop there! Bevilacqua was voted on to the Nixon Surf Team and went on to win competitions such as the 2009 Pipeline Pro, the Outer Banks Pro and the Hello Kitty Boardfest; attracting sponsorships from companies such as Sticky Feet Wax, Sector 9 Skateboards and Nixon; alongside industry giants such as Volcom, Monster Energy and Kicker Audio.
Bevilacqua also spends a lot of time in Italy (Her fathers birth place), California and Hawaii.

Kelly Pro Surfer
Kelly Slater is ten times ASP world champion and is passionate about the ocean. So much so, that in 2007 he established the Kelly Slater Foundation. Registered as a ‘not for profit’ public benefit corporation in Los Angeles, its mission is to raise awareness and financial support for existing social and environmentally conscious charities. The Kelly Slater Foundation is supported through fundraising events, donations from corporations, alongside whatever financial assistance individuals kindly offer.
Born 11th February 1972, Robert Kelly Slater has earned ASP Championship status 10 times. 5 of which were consecutively achieved between 1994 and 1998. In 1997 Slater overtook Austrailian surfing legend Mark Richards to become the most successful champion ever. In May 2005 Slater was the first surfer to ever to have been given two perfect scores under the ASP’s two wave scoring system, resulting in a total of 20 out of 20 points.
Kelly Slater has, naturally, been in many films such as “Surfers – The Movie” (1990), “One Night At McCool’s” (2001) and “Ultimate Wave Tahiti” (2010) to name but a few of the 20 something total. Slater has also released an autobiography entitled “Pipe Dreams; A Surfers Journey” (2003) and, in 2008, released a second book with Phil Jarratt called “Kelly Slater: For The Love”. And before you ask, yes, you can of course find copies of these in our shop.
